Choosing the right connector can be confusing—especially with all the different terms, styles, and options. Here are clear answers to the most common questions we get, so you can get it right the first time.

What does the “number of ways” mean on a connector?

The number of “ways” refers to how many terminals the connector housing can hold.

  • A connector with 2 terminal holes is a 2-way connector
  • A connector with 4 terminal holes is a 4-way connector

What is the gender of a connector housing or terminal?

Connector housings and terminals come in male and female.

  • Male connector housings (plugs) typically use male terminals (pins)
  • Female connector housings (receptacles) typically use female terminals (sockets)

👉 A plug (male housing) fits inside a receptacle (female housing)
👉 A pin (male terminal) fits inside a socket (female terminal)

What components make up a connector?

A fully assembled sealed connector typically includes:

  • Connector housing
  • Wire seals
  • Terminals (pins or sockets)
  • TPA (Terminal Position Assurance) or secondary lock

What is a TPA or secondary lock?

A TPA (Terminal Position Assurance) or secondary lock helps secure the terminals inside the connector housing.

It may be:

  • Built into the connector
  • Or a separate piece installed during assembly

The TPA is sticking out of the connector—Is that normal?

Yes—this is normal.

From the factory, the TPA is often left partially extended.

After inserting your crimped terminals:
👉 Push the TPA fully into place

If it won’t go in:

  • The terminals are likely not fully seated

If the TPA is accidentally pushed in before assembly:
👉 Gently pull it back out using a depinning tool or small flathead screwdriver

⚠️ Be careful—connectors can break if too much force is used

Are your connectors good quality?

Yes.

In most cases, the connector housings, seals, and terminals we sell are genuine factory (OEM) components—the same as originally used on your vehicle or equipment.

In the rare cases OEM parts are unavailable (due to discontinuation or limited supply), we only offer high-quality aftermarket alternatives.

Can I reuse my old terminals with a new connector housing?

In most cases, yes.

Because we primarily sell genuine OEM connector housings, your existing terminals should fit properly.

👉 This is a major advantage over lower-quality replicas, which often:

  • Don’t fit correctly
  • Aren’t compatible with original terminals

Are terminals, pins, sockets, and contacts the same thing?

They’re related, but not exactly the same:

  • Pin = male terminal
  • Socket = female terminal
  • Contact = another general term for terminal

Why do your connector kits include extra terminals?

Most of our kits include at least one extra terminal so you can:

  • Practice your crimp
  • Replace a terminal if one gets damaged during assembly

The connector looks right, but the description doesn’t match my application. Is it still correct?
